My Other Babies

It is that time of year again. Yep, I've done all the my seed-starting in the basement and it is time to start hardening off my little babies so they can make it in the big, bad outside world. So today was the first day I took them outside. They seem to be doing okay but they'll be coming in before the my real kids' rest time is over.

Here is a picture of my set-up downstairs, I really appreciate Mike's putting it together for me!

Here they are outside! (I'm not going to bore you with what they all are)

And with all the "save the earth" mumbo jumbo going on, I'd like you to know that I used washed out yogurt containers to plant the seedlings into (I started them in other recycled containers but super packed in). Mostly because I garden to save money!

I am also trying to really get my compost pile to produce this year.

Here are the specs: one garbage can with lid. The bottom is cut out of it. Holes are drilled in the sides to allow air flow.

Insert all those veggie scraps, leaves, lawn clippings, old bread, egg shells, used paper towels (the ones with no cooking oil anyway), shredded newspaper....on and on and on......basically using both "green" and "brown" components. Lift up and dump the future soil, stir with pitch fork and reinsert in can, do this once or twice a week (or else the smell comes!!!). Water needs to added too but don't flood the thing. See what we've got in the last month?

I'm hoping to get some good, usable compost pretty soon (it would help if the temps stayed warm!).

I am envious of you and your mom for being able to start seedlings in the spring. Compost I could maybe handle. Maybe???

Thanks for the compost demo! I bought a composter, but need another one, we're really getting into the spirit :) Teach me your seed starting ways!!! I have managed to kill all but one of the seeds I planted. Honestly, the one I have left, it's days are numbered. I think that despite all my efforts, I still have a....brown thum.
